  • Lapidus Montclair Run 10K Race Report

    On thanksgiving day I ran a 10K.  I was visiting my mom in Birmingham and decided that since I was gonna be there I might as well race. Of course, this was less than 2 weeks after running the Battlefield Marathon, so it would have stood to reason that I should take a long recovery process.  But my fitness level and the base mileage that I’ve put together allowed me to recover form the marathon rather quickly.  In fact, other than some muscle tenderness for 2 days post-marathon, I was not sore, and ran 8 miles on the Tuesday following the saturday marathon.

    So, running a 10K less than 2 weeks after was not presenting any obstacles or difficulty.  So here is the race eport:

    Had a great warm up and decided to start the race at the pace I’d like to finish it. Goal was to have even splits, so as I started out I found myself at 7:30 and decided to hold that for the race. The race started down hill, and had rolling hills until the finish where the kind race organizers gave us a half mile up hill finish! This shaves about 5 minutes off my PR set in June.

    Finished in 47:01.  I was 12th out of 57 in the Age Group (40-44). Overall results weren’t ready when I left.

    7:33 ,7:30 ,7:32 ,7:26 ,7:32 ,7:22

    I’m so happy to be finally under 50 minutes for a 10K.  Very pleased with my ability to hold that pace!

    As you may know already if you listen to the podcast, I am a member of Team AllEars, a running/fundraising group organized by Deb Wills.  Please read her bio here.  Deb publishes one of, if not THE, longest running Disney electronic newsletter.  AllEars, or some variation of the current newsletter, has been published since 1996.  So she was there from the beginning of the dot com revolution.  And she has become an Oracle of sorts in the Disney Community, a truly amazing woman!

    Since being diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 1986, she has been a tireless advocate for Breast Cancer research as well as a first rate fundraiser.  Team AllEars is her effort to support running and  healthy lifestyle, while also spreading the word about the need for awareness of and support for breast cancer research.  I’m proud to be a member of Team AllEars and will run the 2011 Disney’s Goofy Challenge in support of this cause.

  • Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon Race Report

    Well, I am a sub-4 marathoner. Race was great. The time hasn’t fully registered with me yet, so I’m still kind of numb but thrilled! So happy!

    So the course is run thru the Chickamauga National Park where the key Civil War battle was held. The course is 2 loops for the marathon around and thru the park, so all day long I ran past monuments commemorating the lives sacrificed on that day, which really put into focus the sacrifice we runners had made to get there. Yes, we work hard, but it holds nothing against lives lost in service to one’s nation. The weather was perfect. 41 degrees at start, warmed to about 58 by the time I finished, sunny day, but the park was shady, so no sun beating down on me for long periods. Was perfect in terms of climate and conditions. I wore a singlet, shorts, gloves, arm warmers, and a hat. Carried 20 oz of nuun, 4 gels and 8 endurolytes. I planned to consume water/powerade on course and supplement that with the nuun.

    My pace bubble is 8:45 to 8:15, so the plan was to stay in the upper portion of the bubble for the first part of the race and then slowly increase speed. You’ll see the paces below but the plan worked great. I felt so strong and happy through the first 21 miles of the race. I found myself smiling, giggling even in the middle of this race because I was having so much fun, I was running a marathon, I was fit, happy; where I wanted to be! I smiled at spectators, I said good morning to people while running, gave little kids high fives. I was having a blast!

    At mile 22, I started to fade. I had felt a little weird at 19, and found that I had miscounted gels and had taken one fewer than the plan to that point, so I quickly consumed 2 gels and drank some nuun. That helped, but at mile 22 I started feeling fatigued and the hills seemed larger! So my pace slowed from 8:40 to about 9:05 or so for the last 5 miles. I had a mental battle to fight through the fatigue and get to the finish. I wasn’t sure why I was tiring…more on that in a bit.

    As I rounded the final corner and had about .40 of a mile to go, I looked at my Garmin race time (had only looked at the total time 2 times during the race, when Megan (www.veganrunningmom.com) called to get a status update, and at 20) but I saw that I was at 3:46 and change and I determined I would NOT come in above 3:50, so on pure adrenaline, I mustered a 7:24 pace for almost a half a mile and sprinted across the finish with a huge smile on my face and arms raised triumphantly.

    After getting my medal and sitting down, I noticed the all too familiar white salt crystals on my shoulders and it hit me. I knew why I slowed at the end of the race: hydration. I had taken in fluids at every stop, but not enough. The perfect temps had deceived me, and that I was wearing gloves prevented me from feeling how sweaty my shorts and hat were. I had lost more water than I thought. This is easily fixable for the next race. my training was SPOT ON. So HUGE THANKS to Megan for coaching me to this super result! Without her training, I am nowhere near this time…thanks M! 🙂

    This photo is my boys and me leaving Disney World on our most recent trip and is appropriate for this entry. I’m ceasing publishing to this blog and beginning publishing at a new blog to reflect the Podcast title change.  This blog won’t disappear anytime soon, but any new entries will be at thisrunninglife.wordpress.com.

    Folks, as many of you may know, I changed the name of the podcast to “This Running Life”.  If you are subscribed in iTunes, the feed remains the same, only the title will appear different in your iTunes downloads.  But I have started a new blog, and am slowly building that website as my new web home.  But this site will remain up for a while until I decide if I want to import all of this to Word Press.

    Until then, enjoy my past here and my future at thisrunninglife.wordpress.com

  • Running to Disney- Episode 82: I’m starting to believe

    Gordon makes you suffer through horrible audio as he discusses the process of starting to believe he can reach his BHAG of a BQ.  In short, it is not enough to state a goal, go public with it, and work toward it. One must come to the point where the goal becomes, in heart and mind, attainable, as a possibility, a probability, then an inevitability.  I am starting that process.  I am starting to believe that I CAN do this.  And, at once, it feels wonderful and intoxicating and scary and amazing.

    He also shares a clip from one of his lectures where he attempts to talk “hip” in front of college students.
