    29 Nov 2008

I haven’t run since Tuesday. Holiday travels and rain have killed any plans I had to sneak in a run. I had even packed a bag with all sorts of my running gear for all climates, but no go. I am taking this as an opportunity to heal up little nicks and bumps and such from my long runs and the 700 miles I have run since January!

I feel great and am actually itching to run–which i think will pay off in the next few weeks as I do the final push to the marathon. I’ll be back home tonight and will run 10 on Sunday. The the 22 mile weeks begins with speedwork on Monday and maybe snow flurries!

Podcast episode 4 is up. I finally got a second iTunes comment which had some good advice. I need to incorporate more news into the podcast. People will tire of hearing me pant and ramble all the time. Thanks for listening and for the feedback. Hope you had a productive “Black Friday.” I braved Birmingham’s biggest mall and the only way I found parking was to use the valet service. Best 8 bucks i have spent in a while.

  • They call them junk miles…I call them crap.

    25 Nov 2008

Ran a horrible 6 miles this morning, two days after running 20. I was still stiff and sore and felt horrible. Blech. I won’t run again until Friday because of holiday stuff, so I’ll surely hope to be in a better mood by then. Yuck.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving everybody. I am thankful for you all.

  • 20.

    23 Nov 2008

Did 20 today. A little better run that the 19 from two weeks ago. I had better energy and fitness through about 17, when I started to tire. Mile 20 was pretty tough. Part of it were my legs and feet telling me I was crazy for running this long. But I could get in a rhythm and get going for a while. I ran the whole 20 in 4:17:84–a 12:51 per mile pace over 20. Other than a couple of stretching and gel breaks, my average per mile stayed in the 12s until mile 19 when I hit the wall. And it was a big wall! That last mile took forever .

I only ate a bagel with peanut butter this morning before the run. I am thinking that my pre-run fueling was insufficient. I need to investigate what to eat before the long run. I think I also need to eat a Powerbar or clif bar in the middle of the run, too. I did take a small serving of M&Ms for late in the run and they helped. But the affect was short lived.

I got back to the car and found on my face that dry white salty residue from sweating out your electrolytes. I thought about Charles from Colorado! What happened was that when I started the run, it was quite cool, but the sun came out and I heated up, but was several miles from the car. I had to wait until mile 10 to ditch a jacket. After the run it got overcast again and cooled off pretty quickly. I need to remember to dress a little lighter than i think I should for the marathon. I’m going to be out there for awhile. I little discomfort before sun up will not be as bad as a lot of heat late in my race. Today I was clearly overdressed.

After the run, I went to our local dump and waddled up to the sign (it was closed today) and took a picture for inclusion in the Dump Runners Club.

An ice bath and a chocolate milk later and here I am. One more long run in the books and 20 miles closer to Disney. New podcast coming out next week.

  • Polar rocks!

    14 Nov 2008

On my 19 miler last Sunday, I had to reach into the pouch of my Camelbak for a gel. Little did I know at the time that the strap had yanked one of the buttons off my Polar RS 200. It still worked, but the button was gone and it looked bad. I emailed them yesterday and they are now sending me a set of replacement buttons free of charge.

    Thanks, Polar.

  • 19 miles, a big chocolate milk, and an ice bath (or two)

    11 Nov 2008

19 Miles on Sunday. 19. I still can’t believe that I did it. Running 10 seems like so far away as a milestone. But here we are at 19. In two weeks. I’ll do 20. I just might pull this marathon thing off. Like I said. Remember, I am a pre-middle aged, bald, chubby, slow runner. So I did the 19 in 4:08, averaging 13 minutes a mile. That is good for me for that long a run. Disney race requirements are that you run the marathon no slower than 16 minutes per mile. I am pretty sure that I can finish without getting swept by the van.

I felt really strong in the first 10 or so miles, which I ran a good part up a semi-steady slight incline along a former railway–now a trailway. The temps were in the 30s when I started the run at 7 AM on Sunday but as the sun rose, it warmed to close to 49 or 50 degrees, so at mile 12 I stopped by my car and shed some clothing while refilling my camelbak. The last 7 mile stretch was a 3.5 mile each way out and back. I started to fatigue and took a couple of more gels with a little more frequency than I did the first 12 miles. I might have under-gelled, since I had three left after the run and only consumed 4 during the run. I should have had all 7. But there were no body issues, I felt fine, and was only tired after running the farthest in my life.
On my iPod, I alternated my favorite running podcasts with music to give me nice breaks and help my pace late in the run. It really seemed to work. I realize now that I need to put a little more music in the listening I do for runs as it really does help the pace, if not give an emotional lift.

On the way home, I bought 2 bags of ice and one big chocolate milk, which tasted divine! (the milk, not the ice). My body was talking to me for the rest of the day and stairs were quite an adventure. I skipped a short run scheduled for today to recover fully and I feel great. I am ready to get back on the road tomorrow morning.

New podcast is coming out in a couple of days. Thanks for the kind feedback and if you think about it go to iTunes and leave some comments and ratings. And tell a friend if you think the podcast worthy.

  • A Day Off

    6 Nov 2008

Since July I haven’t missed many runs on this journey to run Disney. But today I took a personal day–I slept in. The week has been a hectic one at work, my car had problems and had to get towed to the shop, I stayed up too late on election night drinking wine and watching returns roll in, and I needed a day off.

I am beyond beating myself up for taking recovery days instead of a run And I think in the long run, it helps get me back on the road refreshed and appreciative of the run. When it feels like a job or something we HAVE to do, then we need a break. That said, I am eager to get back on the road on Friday and excited about a 19 miler on Sunday morning. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Thank you all so much or the feedback on the podcast. I am having a blast and plan to incorporate many of your great suggestions. I am grateful that you took a chance on me.

  • Episode 2 now available

    3 Nov 2008

Episode 2 of the podcast is now available. Let me know what you think.
I discuss what lack of sleep does to my training. Small dogs attack me while on a run. And I report that science is proving that chocolate milk is the perfect post-run recovery drink.

  • 100 mile club

    28 Oct 2008

For the first time in my running life I have run 100 miles in a month–and the month ain’t over yet. Today’s run broke 100 for October and I still have about 13 to run before the month ends.

Feeling kind of proud. Feeling strong , too. Today’s run was cold (30 degrees F at start) and I kept a solid pace even up hills. I think this whole marathon thing just might work out.
