  • A month?

    24 Dec 2007

Wow. I haven’t posted in a month. First there was final exam week, which meant I had to grade and make sure my faculty got their grades in. Then I worked on errands and my book manuscript. Each day, I told myself I needed to post. I haven’t run much. I have been quite busy refereeing soccer games. The money for calling high school soccer games in Louisiana is pretty good, so I got a bunch of games ad paid off our Christmas bills already.

So I have run, but in a sprinting, quick turns, lateral movement way. My first “run” in a couple of weeks was two days ago. I did three miles. No Achilles pain, but my IT band was a bit bothersome, mainly due to my not stretching it and not running much.

yesterday I did two speed miles. I ran 1 mile at sub-5K pace, walked a 1/4 mile, then ran a mile at 5K pace. I didn’t want to run a lot, because I haven’t run two days in a row in sometime, except for reffing soccer games, of course.

I’ll run again tomorrow–Christmas Day–and then will try to get some runs in at Mom’s house. I guess I should have mentioned earlier that Christmas is time when we travel a bunch. I am in semi-sunny Florida right now. A good friend of mine is house sitting and feeding our animals, so we can travel with peace of mind.

We are also taking our kids to Disney World from Jan 1 to 7th, so I will not run at all that week, but I will walk a great deal. I’ll probably drop a few pounds just during that week alone. I know I did last year. That was right after we discovered my high BP, so I was avoiding fried foods, eating mostly salads and wraps at Disney World. I dropped 6 pounds that week. It has been said that one can walk upwards of 7-12 miles a day at Disney World. I believe it.

Hope you all have a great holiday season.

  • Things I’m thankful for

    22 Nov 2007

It is time for the obligatory thanksgiving post. So, I’ll list some things I appreciate in my little part of the world:

-Cool weather on Thanksgiving Day. Here in the South we often have warm weather on a day that should have a nip in the air
-Not driving this year to see relatives. I miss my family, but there is something about having this day in your own home (of course, my mother isn’t letting me hear the end of it)
-My regular readers of this blog (the few of you there are, but there is tremendous quality in your small quantity)
-My kids. We are in our art phase. We are drawing all sorts of superheroes, comic strips, sketches, and whatever they think of for me to draw for them. They then copy what I have drawn. The best part of my day is when we do lay-by time. We tuck each boy in and just chat in the bed with them for about 10 minutes. Pure heaven.
-Running early in the morning on Thanksgiving–before I intake calories!
-My new blog friends, Marathon Chris and Susan, especially. Thanks for sharing your life with me as I share mine with you.
-The start of that “Christmas feeling.” I love this time of year as the Holiday expectations build up.
-Eating turkey sandwiches for dinner after the big meal. To be honest, I like post-Thanksgiving turkey sandwiches more than the actual T-Giving meal itself.
-That my third book will be published. I have written one historical monograph, one local history of my Parish in Louisiana (unrefereed,) and edited a volume of essays. Now, my political biography of Florida Governor Reubin Askew–the only politician I ever admired–will come out in a another 8 months or so from the University of Georgia Press.
-St. Jude’s Research Hospital and the people who give money to support it. No greater cause than that of helping kids get healthy. They deserve long and happy lives and childhoods of freedom and love. Give Thanks.

I ran this morning. I did 2 intervals of 2 miles. I kept at a pace of between 11 and 12 minutes per mile. Not blazing by any means, but for me good and steady.

I am registering for a 5K on Dec 1. This will be my first test of the Achilles in a race situation. But I’ve had no pain at all, and running 4 miles today went a long way in proving that I was back, baby!

  • Pray for Elijah

    14 Nov 2007

I forgot to mention. The St Jude’s marathon is fast approaching and my new blog friend Susan is running as a St Jude Hero. She gave me a bracelet that honors her commitment to raise money for St. Jude’s Research hospital on behalf of a sharp kid named Elijah. So let’s all pray for Elijah. I wanted to do this but my Achilles didn’t agree.

He is going through a rough patch. Visit his site and offer a prayer: http://www.prayforelijah.com/

So, Susan, go get ’em and remember what you are running for when those miles get tough. And I’ll look at my bracelet and pray for you and for Elijah. To quote Steve Runner: “Run Long and Taper.”

  • Miles and miles

    14 Nov 2007

Sorry for so long in between posts. I went to Austin last week for a conference on how to be a better Department Head. I expected 4 days of boredom, but was pleasantly surprised at how useful this stuff was. While there I had hoped to be able to take a scenic run around Austin, but my hotel was near the interstate and not in a great location for runners. So I hopped on the treadmill. That said, Austin is nice. And if you ever get a chance to go by RunTex, you will not be disappointed. This is the best running store I’ve seen. I bought an amphipod fanny pack for cell phone and camera. Some lightweight Nike running gloves, a runner ID tag for my shoes in case I die in mid-run, a cap and a pair of socks with a longhorn logo. Plus I bought a T-shirt publicizing the Austin marathon.

My running routine is accelerating. I am running mile intervals. One lap warm up walk, run a mile. Walk a lap, run a mile. Repeat until three miles are completed. No pain. So far, so good. I am aiming to run in a 5K on December 1.

Oh, before I forget. It is supposed to be cold on Friday morning when I run again. I get to break in the tights!

While I was writing this, my 6-year old came into the room and said “Bombs are hitting the house.” We have a storm coming in and the wind is knocking gobs of acorns off of two big oak trees. They are pounding the roof! This is the same 6-year old who gets mysterious stomach ailments at bedtime. Go figure. I just rub a little hydro cortisone lotion on his belly and tell him to see if that helps. He’s usually out like a light in a few minutes. The trick is to get him to close his eyes for 5 minutes. If he does that, he’s out. I can only imagine when he is a father trying to cure real ailments with hydro cortisone cream!

  • A mile–finally!

    5 Nov 2007

Sunday began my “mile week.” I ran a mile (on the track) without stopping. I did a build up. Walk two laps, run one. Walk a lap, run two. Walk a half-lap, run a mile. Walk one lap, run two laps. Cool down.

No pain during or after the run. I felt great. I “think” I am ready, after this week, to move maybe off the track.

I also started officiating high school soccer games last week and was the center ref for a Junior Varsity boys game. No pain, I had a lot of starts, stops, and sprints. I think I am back!

I officiate two junior high games tommorrow night, and will head to Austin for a conference starting wednesday. I plan to do some running around the town and to visit RunTex, which I am told is an awesome running store.

By the way, I received my Asics Myles tights late last week. As soon as I get them, the weather warms up. Go figure. But they fit great, and feel nice. I wore them around the house and the kids gave me a few looks, but they’ll get over it. I’ll just tell them they are Ninja pants!

  • Resourcefulness

    28 Oct 2007

Runners are resourceful. Have a blister? Slap some duct tape on it and run long. In the era before Body Glide, Vaseline was the best thing to prevent chafing–and is still used for “old school” marathoners. A few weeks ago a good friend introduced me to a fancy muscle roller she had purchased. I looked like a dumb bell but had bearings and a block that allowed you to work over sore muscles. I loved it and wanted one. But I just couldn’t pull the trigger on 60 dollars. I had used foam rollers and before yoga class, I usually go over my Achilles and calves with my Yogi’s foam roller. Still, 17 dollars for a three foot rod of foam was still a bit much. Then I had it–a brain storm. I was in Target yesterday and bought my new muscle roller for less than 5 dollars.

Voila! a common kitchen dough roller!

  • Where has the time gone?

    25 Oct 2007

Wow. It has been nearly a month since my last post. Sorry. I assumed an administrative position this year and am coaching my son’s soccer team. Time is short.

I am still on the track in week 6 of achilles recovery. I am up to running three laps before walking a lap. No pain, but knees and hips are getting reacquainted with running again. I returned to soccer refereeing last week and all went well. I have been reffing small-field games and have had no problems with the achilles. I’ll ref a high school (JV) game next week, and that’ll be my big test. Running for 70 minutes after 14 year old girls (that would sound horrible if it weren’t a soccer game!) will test my recovery.

I ordered my first set of running tights (Asics Myles Tights). They should be here in a few days. Never had “tights” and I am kind of nervous about wearing them. But given the time change and the fact that I run at 5:30 AM, no one should be able to see me in them! They were only 30 dollars. I feel this is another step in my immersion into “real runner” status. I figure that if you buy a set of tights, then you must be a runner. Here’s a question. What does one wear UNDER the tights. All my running shorts have liners, so undies have not been an issue for a while. I am NOT going commando! Help.

As the weather here in the Deep South turns cooler (44 degrees this morning) I find running easier and see that my heart rate is dropping. I did my first 3-lap interval this morning at sub-5K pace and at the completion of the third lap, my watch said my HR was 70% of max. Wow! In July (100 degrees, 99% humidity) 1/4 mile would have had my HR at 80-85%.

I have pretty much ruled out the St. Jude’s marathon or half. I am nowhere near ready for a 5K, much less 13.1 miles. That’s okay. I am freeing myself from the pressure of self-imposed deadlines. Enjoy the run, not the destination. That’s the new motto.

  • 3rd week back

    3 Oct 2007

Started my third week back. Back running four days per week now, with one off day and two weight training days. Still confined to the track. At first I was ready to get off the track but I am taking the opportunity to work on form and just let my body get used to running again. NO PAIN in the achilles. But my knees and ankles, which had a thirty day vacation, are talking to me.

If you don’t already know about the Phedippidations worldwide half marathon then follow this link: http://www.worldwidehalf.com. You can run this (or the 5k) on the scheduled date wherever you live. Go to that site to register. From my recovery schedule progress, I would guess all I can do is the 5K.

  • Honored

    3 Oct 2007

I was listening to the September 21st issue of the Phedippidations Podcast and was surprised, honored, and proud to have been named the blog of the week. Steve Runner is a great guy and I love the podcast–he says he is not a philosophical type, but I get a lot out of his ruminations. At any rate, thanks, Steve. You can check it out yourself at http://www.steverunner.com. Awesome stuff.

  • Day 2: still feeling good

    18 Sep 2007

2d day back this morning. Back at the track. I walked two laps as warmup, then ran the straights and walked the curves for 2.5 more miles. Getting used to the footpod. I had thought it was measuring my distance a little generous until I realized that for the first part of my session, I was NOT in the inside lane of the track. Rather I had waked/run on the outside lanes, which added distance. So, all worked fine.

Ice and ibuprofen after exercise and alternate workout tomorrow. Back at it Thursday. I felt much betrer all over this morning. No IT band/knee soreness. No achilles issues either.

So far so good. Taking it slooowww. Which means no soccer reffing for a while. I told the local assignor that I won’t be able to ref any local soccer games until I am fully back.

  • First day back: a report

    17 Sep 2007

Sunday was my first day back to running in more than a month. As instructed, I ran around our local high school track (nice padded surface). I ran the straights and walked the curves. I did jog one lap at the end to calibrate my new foot pod. I ran a total of probably three miles. One thing I HATE about the track is my inability to keep up with how many laps I run. Was that 6 or 7? Have I gone a mile yet?

The foot pod will assist my memory for future runs. But to accurately calibrate the thing, one has to run at least 4oo meters. I didn’t want to do that until well after I had warmed up.

I felt…well… okay. No pain in the achilles area. Although my body did react in a way that it realized something new was happening. I underestimated how much I would have to reintroduce my body to running. From my feet through my hips, the body is reacquainted itself with pounding and running. My IT band got stiff near the end of the run, in my outer left knee area. But this is just a matter of better IT stretching.

I’ll do this for a couple of weeks and then get back into distance runs off the track, maybe. So far, so good.
